The 42mm Apple Watch Series 10 and 11 takes bands from the small family: 38mm, 40mm and 41mm bands fit, as do new 42mm bands. Bands from the original 42mm Apple Watch (Series 1–3) are the large size and don't belong to this family.

This is the most common Apple Watch mix-up. Apple reused “42mm”: the first Apple Watch's 42mm case was the large size, but the Series 10 and 11 42mm case is the small size. Go by the family, not the number: small bands (38/40/41mm) for this watch.
